Early Life and Musical Beginnings

Wiktor moved to Coventry at the age of two, growing up in an environment rich with artistic influence. His early exposure to the arts sparked a curiosity that extended beyond music to history and culture. He started guitar lessons at eight, which laid the foundation for his musical skills. By eleven, he had taught himself to play the accordion using his grandfather’s old instrument, showing early signs of his self-driven approach to music.

Though music was not a constant focus during his early teens, a renewed interest in classical guitar in 2021 reignited his passion. This period marked the beginning of his original compositions, which combined his romantic sensibilities with various contemporary elements. These early works became the cornerstone of his developing style.

Education and Artistic Development

In 2022, Wiktor began formal studies in composition at the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire. Under the mentorship of respected composers Andrew Toovey, Howard Skempton, and Joe Cutler, he continues to refine his craft and expand his musical vocabulary. The support from the RBCA helped him gain opportunities to further work on his craft by allowing him to simply spend more time on his pieces.

His compositions have been brought to life by groups such as the Sitwell Singers, Romantic Revival Orchestra, Tapestry Collective, Aura Quartet, and Clarinet Collective. Solo performers like Aoife Jennions and Samantha Atkinson have also contributed to showcasing his work. These collaborations have helped Wiktor reach diverse audiences and explore different musical textures.

Notable Performances and Projects

Wiktor’s piano pieces (Op.3–Op.6) premiered at Draper’s Hall in Coventry, performed by pianist Kevin Stannard. This event highlighted his ability to write intimate yet powerful solo works. In April 2023, his Concerto for Two Guitars (Op.8) debuted at Bradshaw Hall with the Romantic Revival Orchestra, an ensemble he founded to explore what he calls “Romantic Revival.” This genre seeks to bring the emotional intensity of romantic music into a contemporary context, blending it with various contemporary influences. The RRO this Friday performs the reworked version of his concerto.

Looking ahead, Wiktor plans to premiere his Symphony No. 1 with the Romantic Revival Orchestra at the CBSO Centre in February 2026. This upcoming concert will mark a significant step in his orchestral writing and artistic growth.

Cultural Roots and Personal Identity

Beyond his musical career, Wiktor remains deeply connected to his Polish heritage. He is an active member of the folk dance group ZPiT Wieśniacy, which allows him to engage with traditional Polish culture. This cultural duality enriches his music and personal identity, providing a unique perspective that informs his compositions.

Wiktor Wysocki’s music offers a fresh and compelling voice in contemporary composition. His blend of romantic expressiveness with minimalist textures creates works that are both emotionally resonant and intellectually engaging. As he continues to develop his style and present new works, Wiktor is a composer to watch for those interested in innovative classical music that honours tradition while pushing boundaries.
